What is our obsession with labelling everything? Is it tribal? Maybe its because I’m a nutrition advisor but food seems to be the area where we just love to label ourselves. Every new diet plan has a new name, and there seems to be a new one every week. We all rush to work with our specially selected preordained range of foods in our newly bought containers, and announce to anyone that is interested that we are on the new ‘madwoman diet’ and happily discuss how it’s making us feel healthier and this is the birth of the new you, the new improved mad-woman; that is until Wednesday, when we are starving and we bin the fancy containers and rush off to the burger van for lunch.
And what about the new ‘tarian diet? Not heard of it? Surely you are a vegetarian, or maybe a pescatarian, or at least a flexitarian? Forgive me for being cynical but isn’t the term flexitarian just someone who eats a range of different foods – ie pretty much all the population?
Oh and don’t get me started on Clean Eating, Meat Free Monday…the list just goes on and on.
Now, I do believe in eating great quality seasonal food, but it should be the food that you choose to put on your own plate, not the food that some advisor, social media guru or celebrity has chosen for you.
We seem to have lost touch with the joyous act of eating food we enjoy, surrounded by people we love, to create great memories whilst nourishing our bodies and minds.
If you are nodding throughout this, but you have been caught up in the cycle too long, I can help you break it! I work with clients to guide and encourage them to create their own healthy diet, based around the foods they enjoy, and whatever challenges their life might throw at them. If you want to know more please get in touch.
