In this episode, I talk to Nicole Burska, The Stress Nutritionist. We talked about Nicole’s journey into the world of nutrition. And about how stress can affect our health in ways we might not have realised. Nicole also shares her top 3 tips for reducing stress in our lives. `
About Nicole
” After struggling with burnout, depression and digestive issues, Nicole is on a journey to discover the link between mental health and manifestation of physical illness. Learning the importance of not only nutrients but also the influence of certain stresses and their impact of various parts of the body.”
How lifestyle affects our health
Some clients might appear to have can have the perfect diet, taking all the right supplements and exercising, but still their health is poor. It can be frustrating, but Nicole works on coaching and encouraging her clients to improve their social connections.
Nicole herself suffered from depression and burnout when many stressors in her life coincided. It made her realise that she had to take care of herself and ensure that she had measures in place to stop it happening again.
How did Nicole get into the nutrition world
Nicole started working for Neals Yard Remedies whilst at University, but soon realised that she was looking forward to work more than her degree. She then took that interest and passion, and studied at the Institute of Nutrition to become a Nutritional Therapist. She knew before she finished her studies that helping people manage stress was her calling.
She now offers specialist support to those in the caring world. Nurses, dieticians and other nutritionists can often put their own health at the bottom of the list. Her 12-week course looks at addressing the balance.
How does stress manifest?
It’s often small signs that indicate stress is affecting our health. Look out procrastination or reaching for sugary foods. Our skin can be a good indicator of something being not quite right, do you suffer with stress spots?
Also, our digestive health definitely suffers if we are stressed; constipation, bloating and discomfort can all be early indicators.
Simple coping mechanisms – top 3 tips
Nicole is a passionate rock climber and this is one of her main coping mechanisms. She shares with us her top 3 tips:
- Social support – make sure you connect with family and friends regularly.
- Rest more – not necessarily sleep, you could read a book or watch a movie. Ensure you are taking time out.
- Find movement – find a sport or other ways of moving that you enjoy. It boosts your mood.
What have you got for tea?
Nicole is intuitive about her food and so will grab something when she is hungry, probably some grains and vegetables.
