In this week’s episode, I talk about digestion. Do you suffer with poor digestion or IBS? Have you considered whether how you are feeling is affecting it?
What is digestion?
It is everything that happens from your mouth to your anus. The food and liquids, you consume, go through a complex series of tubes and pipes until they come out the other end. Everything that happens in between is your digestive system.
Why might stress affect it?
Stress is our body’s reaction to a situation. We are reacting to a stressor, something that is a danger to us, and this activates our ‘fight, flight or freeze’ response. It sets off a chain of physical, chemical and psychological reactions in our body, and one of them is to shut down digestion. We do not need to digest food if we are running away from danger.
Rest and Digest
We are constantly bombarded by stressors. Our phones are constantly pinging, we are available 24/7. We eat on the go.
All of these things are negatively affecting our digestion. Eating and resting are inextricably linked and without calm you can’t get efficient digestion.
