In this week’s episode, I interview Carrie Ekins who calls herself “The Body Geek”. We are both so fascinated by the body and how everything that we do has an impact on our bodies.
About Carrie
Carrie Ekins (pronounced Eee-kins) is passionate about humans: their ability to create, to make, to invent and to be. Intrigued by the ways in which we block our own paths and fail to believe in our individual and collective brilliance. Carrie’s mission is to help amazing people fulfil themselves, to say “Yes” to their potential and open themselves up to all the good stuff – throwing their “gunk” to the wind whilst owning what makes them special, slinky and fabulous. Scintillated by wonder, filled up with curiosity, an avid eater of cake, there are always more questions than answers.
Carrie is a therapist and is a mentor. She looks at body in all sorts of ways to try and release negative feelings. Carrie uses pressure through massage to heal trauma and injury but during the current pandemic, Carrie does a lot of her treatment virtually by talking to her clients about their gunk and mindset.
What is gunk?
Gunk is the things that we carry around with us everyday, sometimes without realising that we are carrying it around. This is heavily impacted by the environment that we bathe ourselves in, our thoughts and our self beliefs. What we eat, who we spend time with and many other things can affect our thoughts and how we feel.
Carrie says that the number 1 tip to help with your gunk is – learn how to breathe deeply into your diaphragm. It will help you to feel grounded, especially when in a state of panic.
How to improve our health and mindset
There are many ways to improve our health and our mindsets. Rather than running a marathon within 4 months of starting to train, we need to think more realistically. Start to move a little each day, walk for an hour and make the most of your time to use your senses. What can you see, hear, smell, touch and taste?
Carrie calls it our ‘knobbly bobbly tool kit’ of self care, and she encourages us all to connect with ourselves and work out what our personal tool kit contains.
How powerful is the mind?
To show how powerful the mind and body are, Carrie ask us to do a little exercise. I am truly amazed by how powerfully our mind can affect our body and movement. Please have a go when you listen to the podcast, unless you are driving of course!

In summary…
It is absolutely fine to admit to yourself and others that it is okay to not be okay. What you feed into your body and what you do with your body will really play a part in how you are feeling. Have you got any gunk to get rid of?
