In this weeks episode, I talk to you about how to prevent food waste, My members have given me lots of tips to share with you!
New Year
I am not a huge fan of new years resolutions when it comes to eating well. However, if you are someone that likes to set yourself a resolution or two, why not commit to reduce food waste? This will help you, as well as the environment.
20 tips to prevent waste
- Use up small amounts of vegetables in meals. These would be great in rice, omelette or in a frittata to make another meal.
- Use vegetable and herb peelings to make vegetable stock. These can be frozen and then used when you are ready.
- Use bones to make a bone broth. These can be frozen and the stock used when you are ready.
- Use your leftover bread to make breadcrumbs – pop it on the windowsill to harden up first, then blitz.
- Slice your bread and freeze it – you can then take as much as you need at a time.
- Use the teeny tiny odds to make bento boxes for childrens lunchboxes. Think – a couple of cherry tomatoes and a single slice of cheese or ham.
- Keep a tub in your freezer for your tiny amounts of homemade sauce and keep adding to it until the tub is full.
- Make double the amount of any meal and freeze it. This is great if you buy more than you need because it is on offer!
- Freeze your parmesan rind and put it into soups or stews for added flavour.
- Freeze leftover wine into ice cubes (if you have some left!) – Does this work? Let me know!
- Freeze fruits. This works really well with berries. Just pop them into a bag and lay them flat until they have frozen.
- Stew apples with cinnamon and then freeze them in portions. This is great when added to porridge.
- Turn your ‘about to go off’ fruits into a smoothie.
- Hard-boil eggs that are about to go out of date.
- Cook meat that has been previously frozen and it’s okay to freeze.
- Use your leftover limp vegetables to make a soup.
- Get chickens at home! They will eat your leftovers and they provide you with eggs.
- Oven cook your potato peelings as they make great dog treats.
- Freeze your black bananas. Peel and roughly slice before freezing. They can be used for smoothies, “ice-cream” or banana bread.
- PLAN PLAN PLAN! You can click HERE to buy one of my meal planners! It is easy to use, it is undated so you can start to use it whenever you are ready, it has a notes and shopping list section.
In summary
We can make a huge difference by making small changes to reduce waste. Make sure you are aware fo the difference between ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates on packaging, and use your common sense when dealing with fresh vegetables and fruit. We can make a massive impact to the environment, to our pocket and even to our waistline if we waste less and eat what we buy.
Happy new year to you all, see you in 2021! Thank you to my members and my listeners, I really appreciate you all!
