Episode 72 – Seasonal Food

This weeks episode is all about seasonal food. One of my favourite topics! Seasonal foods are widely available but if you don’t know what you are looking for they are sometimes hard to spot.

At this current time, our shopping habits have changed. Whilst I am still buying as much locally as I can, I’m not having the same conversations with the suppliers that I would do normally. For example, I normally buy game locally but I have not bought any and it is coming to the end of the season, this is just because I’ve not really had chance to properly chat to the butchers and have got into the habit of buying the same things, something we all do.

I buy from my local food hub, the food is provided by local farms, and so the only vegetables and fruit that are available are those that are picked fresh, or have been stored since harvesting. But if you are in buying from the supermarkets it’s sometimes hard to tell. Always look for where your food has been produced, if it’s from the country you are shopping in (so for me the UK) then that’s a good indicator that it’s currently in season.

What foods will be coming into season?

In February and March there are many foods that will be coming into season. These will include:

  • Lamb – it is farmed very well and tastes amazing.
  • Mussels – they bring back lovely memories for me!
  • Vegetables – my husband’s favourite is purple sprouting broccoli. Lots of spring vegetables will soon be available such as spring cabbage and spring onions (the clue is in the name!).
  • Rhubarb – I really want to start playing more with rhubarb recipes.
  • Beetroot – add yoghurt, spices, dill and walnuts to grated beetroot for a lovely side dish.
  • Carrots – these are available all year round. They are great for your eyes and skin. Grated into meals add an extra source of nutrients to your meals.

I recently watched a show on BBC Horizon which were rating seasonal foods. Click HERE to check it out. And it was a good education on how what foods you choose to eat has a big impact on the CO2 levels.
