Remember the raging hormones, the emotional rollercoaster that was puberty. Perimenopause is a lot like that but in reverse. In Japan the menopause is called second spring
Hormonal Imbalances
Prior to puberty girls and boys are fairly similarly matched. Meaning that if they are the same height, build and weight they will have similar strength. As puberty hits both sexes get an increase in sex hormones. For boys it’s an increase in testosterone, which promotes an increase in muscle mass.
Girls get a whole heap of hormones. Oestrogen being the one that we talk most about but also progesterone, folicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone play a delicate and intricate balance. Girls will start to menstruate and their monthly hormone cycle will begin to form.
Eventually, the hormones become cyclical and a womans fertile period begins. Each cycle of approx. 28 days sees varying degrees of these hormones in a monthly dance.
Emotional Imbalances
Do you remember the anger, the despair the fear during puberty? The difficulty finding your place in your class, your home and then at work. For many of us it was a period of adjustment and sometimes it was bewildering and sometimes unpredictable.
During menopause we are experiencing a change in our hormone balance. Just like in puberty this imbalance often means that we experience volatile emotional swing. We can’t say when it will happen, or how we will feel. And it’s scary.
The good thing is that it is temporary, and our hormones will become balanced again. Only this time we won’t have a monthly cycle and so we won’t experience those regular changes that we have had during our fertile years.
Wonderful calm and serenity
Ancient tribes revered the older women, they had survived through hardship and were strong as a result. They had a wealth of knowledge that the tribe could use to ensure they had the strongest tribes. They were often seen as mentors and teachers, passing on what they had learned to the younger members.
In Japan they refer to the menopause as the second spring. It is a time of calm and serenity.
