Week 16

Wow, four months in and I’m still shopping locally for all my food! Unfortunately, I had to go to a supermarket this week; we needed boring stuff like toothbrushes, bleach, washing up liquid, cleaning cloths etc.  And because we have the builders here now for the next few months I bought a big box of t-bags (they requested Yorkshire Tea) and coffee.  I chose the local Co-op as it’s a small shop and on the middle of an estate, which means that it helps lots of people who might be a bit less...

Week 15

This week started with the amazing Lichfield Food Festival, over 60,000 people visited our little city over the bank holiday weekend. We had a fab time on the Monday and came home with a bag full of goodies, although that did mean we ended up eating scotch eggs for breakfast, pork pies for lunch and meat pies for dinner for a few days, not that I’m complaining, but my waistband did groan a bit. You can read about my day at the show here. I picked up some healthy organic chicken breasts from...

Week 14

So far it’s been a beautiful bank holiday weekend, I hope you are all enjoying it as much as me. it’s been a busy weekend which started on Friday with a lovely sunny brunch at Faro to celebrate my friends birthday earlier in the week. We then travelled up to friends in Leeds for the evening and on to York Races on Saturday, it was a great day at the races, the weather and company was perfect. Then a delicious meal afterwards at The Star in the City, which I can’t take credit for booking: my...

Week 13

I finally managed to make it to an Indian supermarket this week, I ended up in Walsall at Johal Supermarket, the main reason was that they had parking!! But I was impressed by the range of products on sale and will definitely be there again soon. I managed to buy loads of dry and tinned beans and pulses, but not only that; they had proper shopping trolleys and basics such as cling film and washing powder.  I was blown away by the range of really interesting fresh produce they had too, so...

Day 90 – the end of the challenge?

Although I don’t think I would have admitted it even to myself three months ago, when I set myself this challenge, I  needed to find something to distract me and give my mind something else to focus on other than the fact that I was in the middle of selling my shares in my family business, in which I had worked for 27 years. I was feeling lost and anxious and needed to occupy my thoughts.  I’d already created this blog  a while ago to encourage me to record my recipes and...

Day 87

Wow, over 13 weeks into my shop local challenge, time has really flown, and I’ll post a blog on day 90 to summarise, but first what have I been up to this week?  I attempted a lentil roast for lunch on Sunday, I checked a few recipes online but didn’t have all the ingredients, so I decided to just go for it. Unfortunately it didn’t set, even after allowing it to cool, so it ended being lentil mush rather than loaf, but it tasted really good, however I’m not sure the Committed Carnivore is...

Day 80

Is it really, only 10 days to go until the end of my challenge? Not long till I can go back to the supermarket? Not likely! The highlight of my week was Terre à Terre in Brighton, I had the most amazing meal there with my niece and sister-in-law, the food and service were stunning. The portions were generous and beautifully presented, but what I loved was that everything we ate was vegan. I haven’t ever eaten a restaurant meal that was totally vegan before and the food at Terre a Terre is a...

Day 73

I started this week off really well, lots of batch cooking for our lunches and loads of pots of overnight oats for our breakfasts.  I knew it was likely to be a busy week for me, I had lots of appointments in the diary which meant if I wasn't organised I'd end up missing meals and the struggling to find something filling, nutritious and, more importantly, from an independent. On Tuesday I was working from home so i walked the dog via the town and visited Walter Smith Butchers, Hindleys for a...
