So far it’s been a beautiful bank holiday weekend, I hope you are all enjoying it as much as me. it’s been a busy weekend which started on Friday with a lovely sunny brunch at Faro to celebrate my friends birthday earlier in the week. We then travelled up to friends in Leeds for the evening and on to York Races on Saturday, it was a great day at the races, the weather and company was perfect. Then a delicious meal afterwards at The Star in the City, which I can’t take credit for booking: my...
Week 13
I finally managed to make it to an Indian supermarket this week, I ended up in Walsall at Johal Supermarket, the main reason was that they had parking!! But I was impressed by the range of products on sale and will definitely be there again soon. I managed to buy loads of dry and tinned beans and pulses, but not only that; they had proper shopping trolleys and basics such as cling film and washing powder. I was blown away by the range of really interesting fresh produce they had too, so...
Green Soup, delicious hot or cold
Green soup This was a bit of an experiment that actually turned out really well the first time. I was cooking a roast chicken last Sunday and I hate only having one thing in the oven so I was mooching in the fridge to see what I had and there was loads of green stuff! I decided to roast off a small green squash with a couple of green peppers, sprinkled with hot smoked paprika to enhance the smokey flavour, then when cool whizzed with some spring onions, herbs and spinach. The result was...
Day 90 – the end of the challenge?
Although I don’t think I would have admitted it even to myself three months ago, when I set myself this challenge, I needed to find something to distract me and give my mind something else to focus on other than the fact that I was in the middle of selling my shares in my family business, in which I had worked for 27 years. I was feeling lost and anxious and needed to occupy my thoughts. I’d already created this blog a while ago to encourage me to record my recipes and...
Day 87
Wow, over 13 weeks into my shop local challenge, time has really flown, and I’ll post a blog on day 90 to summarise, but first what have I been up to this week? I attempted a lentil roast for lunch on Sunday, I checked a few recipes online but didn’t have all the ingredients, so I decided to just go for it. Unfortunately it didn’t set, even after allowing it to cool, so it ended being lentil mush rather than loaf, but it tasted really good, however I’m not sure the Committed Carnivore is...
Day 80
Is it really, only 10 days to go until the end of my challenge? Not long till I can go back to the supermarket? Not likely! The highlight of my week was Terre à Terre in Brighton, I had the most amazing meal there with my niece and sister-in-law, the food and service were stunning. The portions were generous and beautifully presented, but what I loved was that everything we ate was vegan. I haven’t ever eaten a restaurant meal that was totally vegan before and the food at Terre a Terre is a...
Noodles for lunch today, tomorrow and the next day
I was sitting at my desk in my home office (the spare bedroom) and suddenly I realised was starving. I'm not sure about you but this happens to me all the time when I'm working on my own; I get distracted by something and before I know it it's several hours later and I've not eaten or drunk a thing. If I'm in a normal working environment with other things/people around me there are distractions and markers that remind me what time it is: other people going on their lunch, coffee's being...
Day 73
I started this week off really well, lots of batch cooking for our lunches and loads of pots of overnight oats for our breakfasts. I knew it was likely to be a busy week for me, I had lots of appointments in the diary which meant if I wasn't organised I'd end up missing meals and the struggling to find something filling, nutritious and, more importantly, from an independent. On Tuesday I was working from home so i walked the dog via the town and visited Walter Smith Butchers, Hindleys for a...
