Vitamin D Test with Nutrition Consultation

Find out what your vitamin D level is – and what to do about it.

Vitamin D plays an important role in so many areas of our health, including bone and muscle health, immune function and general wellbeing. Yet low vitamin D levels are common, particularly here in the UK where our ability to make vitamin D from sunlight is limited during the autumn and winter months.

This simple at-home blood test allows you to check your current vitamin D level, and then we can use the result to make personalised recommendations.

What does the test measure?

The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH D), the main circulating form of vitamin D and the marker commonly used to assess vitamin D status.

It’s a simple finger-prick test that you complete at home. Your sample is then returned to the laboratory for analysis.

Who might benefit from testing?

You might want to check your vitamin D levels if you:

  • spend much of your day working indoors
  • get relatively little sunlight exposure
  • regularly use sunscreen or cover most of your skin
  • have darker skin
  • are taking a vitamin D supplement but don’t know whether the amount you’re taking is right for you
  • simply want to take a more proactive approach to your health
  • notice that you are more prone to coughs and colds than previously.

Testing can be particularly useful if you’ve been supplementing for some time. Knowing your level can help us make a more informed decision about whether you need to supplement and, if so, what your next steps should be.

More than just a test result

Your test includes a 30-minute online consultation with me, so you won’t simply receive a number and be left wondering what it means.

We’ll go through your result together and look at it in the context of your diet, lifestyle and any supplements you’re currently taking. I’ll then give you practical, personalised recommendations to help you optimise your vitamin D status. If your result suggests that further investigation or medical support would be appropriate, I’ll explain that too.

How it works

You’ll receive your test kit to complete at home using a simple finger-prick blood sample. Return your sample to the laboratory using the prepaid envelope provided and your results are usually available within seven days.

Once your results are available, I’ll share your results along with a link to book your 30-minute online consultation, where we will talk through what they mean and what I’d recommend you do next.

FAQs

How do I know if my vitamin D is low?
It can be difficult to know whether your vitamin D levels are low based on how you feel alone. Some people may experience symptoms such as tiredness, muscle weakness or aches, while others have no obvious symptoms at all.
A vitamin D blood test is the most reliable way to check your vitamin D status and can help you make a more informed decision about whether supplementation is appropriate.

What does a vitamin D blood test measure?
A vitamin D blood test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH D), the main circulating form of vitamin D in the blood and the marker commonly used to assess your vitamin D status.
Your result gives us a much clearer picture of your current level, rather than simply guessing whether you’re getting enough from sunlight, food or supplements.

Can I test my vitamin D levels at home?
Yes. This is an at-home vitamin D blood test using a simple finger-prick sample, so there’s no need to visit a clinic for a blood draw.
You’ll complete the test at home and return your sample to the laboratory for analysis. Once your result is available, your HillStart test also includes a 30-minute online consultation with me to discuss your result and what to do next.

Should I test my vitamin D if I already take a supplement?
Yes, testing can be particularly useful if you’re already taking vitamin D. The amount you need can vary depending on factors such as your current vitamin D status, sun exposure, diet and individual circumstances.
Taking a supplement doesn’t necessarily mean your level is optimal – and more isn’t always better. Testing allows us to see where your level actually is and make more personalised recommendations rather than continuing to supplement without knowing.

What happens if my vitamin D level is low?
If your vitamin D blood test shows that your level is low, we’ll discuss the result during your 30-minute consultation and look at factors that could be contributing, including your diet, lifestyle, sun exposure and current supplements.
I’ll give you personalised recommendations for your next steps, which may include changes to your diet or vitamin D supplementation. If your result indicates that further investigation or medical support would be appropriate, I’ll recommend that you speak to your GP.
